CDL Legislative Alert
S1624B is on the Senate calendar and could be ready for a vote by early
next week. While the Governor has signed into law as part of the NYS
Budget an amendment to V&T law allowing a fire vehicle to be driven to the
emergency (and now back) without a CDL, we still have no exemption for
training, maintenance and other activities such as parades.
S1624B is just the first step. Please address your legislators through
the electronic message linked by clicking on "Take Action". Due to the
rules of procedure of the Legislature, we need A6051A to pass the Assembly
with identical language. Right now these bills are different and will
require further amendments to agree.
The letter you send through FASNY's Legislative Education and
Assistance Program (LEAP) communicates that thought and alerts all members
of the legislature to this potential problem. While each bill restores our
original blanket exemption from the CDL, the language must agree and also
be reviewed by Federal DOT and NYS DMV. The process is obviously involved
and requires cooperation at many levels.
We would ask you to use the communication provided to make your voice
heard.
